Traversing the Natural, Supernatural, and Paranormal: Yōkai in Postwar Japan

Yōkai is an elusive category in Japanese history, folklore, and popular culture. It consists of mysterious phenomena that can exercise extraordinary agency their interactions with humans. Attempting to grapple this amorphous category, folklore studies has defined yōkai as malevolent supernatural beings. However, a survey these reveals most instances do not fit definition. This article discusses the supernaturalization relegation “otherworld” process primarily occurred three stages: developments kokugaku cosmology during early nineteenth century, import concept at turn twentieth boom late 1960s. In particular, emphasizes importance straddled premodern folk community modernized society, leading conflation concepts supernatural, otherworld, yōkai.
